 This three-day course is designed to give new infection preventionists all they need to get started in infection prevention. The sessions cover all the major components of an effective infection prevention program, and provide a stimulating learning environment through the use of exercises, real-life examples, and interactivity. Target audience for the course includes new infection preventionists, as well as those in need of a refresher course. Attendees of this conference come from a variety of health care settings, including: acute care, long term care, long term acute care, home care and hospice, behavioral health, ambulatory surgery centers, physician’s offices, emergency services, public health, corporate/educational health services, correctional facilities, and others.

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the program, attendees will be able to:

Develop a system for surveillance of healthcare-associated infections

State the various components of transmission-based isolation precautions, as published in CDC’s Guideline for Isolation in Healthcare Facilities

Present surveillance data using statistical methods such as rates and ratios

Describe basic principles of sterilization, disinfection and antisepsis

Prepare a facility-wide emergency preparedness and response plan for threats such as an influenza pandemic or a bioterrorism event

Develop a comprehensive plan for surveillance based on whether your facility is an acute care or a non-acute care facility

State several of the major microorganisms which are common causes of disease in many healthcare facilities, their modes of transmission and prevention methods

Prepare an employee health program using the current OSHA requirements

State the steps used in an outbreak investigation

State the major site-specific infections and how to prevent transmission of these infections.
