The intent of this new presentation is to educate healthcare staff on preparedness and emergency response in the event of an influenza pandemic. It gives an overview of the influenza virus, the causes of a pandemic, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Influenza Pandemic Phases, and the conditions which would exist at each phase. It discusses avian influenza as a possible cause of the next pandemic, giving rationale as to how the virus is expected to change into one that might be more easily transmitted from person to person. Finally, the program outlines in detail the recommended steps in a preparedness plan in the healthcare facility, using recommendations from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and World Health Organization (WHO).
